Of War . . . And Peace

Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ.  May The Lord bless you and pour His grace upon you and your loved ones.

The Bible contains many references of war during biblical times and there have been many wars since then.  Many of the wars have been ''religious'' wars.  The Crusades, which pitted Christians against Moslems, are a prime example of religious wars.  Many people have died as a result of these, as well as all the other wars.

We believe it is important for us to take a look at what the Bible has to say about this:

To begin, Matthew 5:9 quotes from Jesus' ''Sermon on the Mount,'' where he said, ''Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.''  This should convey the message that those who seek peace hold a special place in The Lord's view.

''Peace be with you!'' is a greeting used extensively throughout the Bible by people when they meet.  ''Shalom,'' means peace.

Another thing that becomes apparent regarding peace is that it is something realized through human effort.  Romans 14:17-19 says, ''For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  He who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.  Let us then pursue what makes for peace . . .''  Romans 12:16-18 continues this line of thought.  It says, ''Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly and never be conceited.  Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.''  2 Timothy 2:22 adds, ''Therefore, shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love and peace . . .''

We believe this makes The Lord's will known regarding war and peace.

We leave you with one final thought, which is stated in 2 Corinthians 13:11, ''Finally, brethren, mend your ways, agree with one another, live in peace and God will be with you.''

May God bless you and your loved ones.  Shalom!
