Christmas, A Time for Children

Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.  May The Lord bless you and pour His grace upon you and your loved ones.

Most of us are familiar with the saying, ''Christmas is a time for children.''  It is a saying that has been in existence for many years and is generally associated with the commercial aspects of Christmas . . . Santa Claus, Christmas trees and presents.

However, God holds children in a special light.  He blesses families with children and knows each of them--even before they are born--for He is their creator.  Jesus also held children in high regard throughout his life on earth.  Matthew, Mark and Luke each comment upon one event that shows the special place children held with Jesus.  Luke 18:15-17 (RSV) says, ''Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.  But Jesus called to them, saying, 'Let the children come to me and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God.  Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child, shall not enter it.' ''

Parents need to remember the special place children hold with The Lord.  They need to provide care for their children, they need to see that their children are educated--both in The Lord and in the subjects that they will need throughout life, and finally, to provide the discipline their children require. Children, on the other hand, should obey and honor their parents, respect them in their old age, and care for them.

So, you see, there is good reason to believe that Christmas is a time for children.  For it is first and foremost the celebration of a child . . . The baby Jesus.  However, in addition to the special relationship between children and Christmas, we older children in Christ should also celebrate the event and remember ''the reason for the season'' is Jesus Christ, our lord and savior.

Rejoice and enjoy!  Merry Christmas to all!

May The Lord shower His grace upon you and your loved ones, especially during this blessed time of year.
